WARD AND BRANCH GOAL - 16 quilts plus 140 other Humanitarian Items or kits from each ward or branch  = 2006 Humanitarian Aid Items for the 2006 year

Some of us hit our goal by June 1, although many wards need to still make the quilts.  So now--- a new goal.... everyone make all you can to help those in need.

Bev Qualheim is our Stake Specialist over this project and she would be happy to go to wards and talk about Humanitarian Work, or teach people how to make warm, needed items. She can teach crochet, knit, and looming

"We shall go on in this work. There will always be a need. Hunger and want and catastrophes will ever be with us. And there will always be those whose hearts have been touched by the light of the gospel who will be willing to serve and work and lift the needy of the earth." President Gordon B. Hinckley, General Conference May 2004

Suggestions of where to donate?  Please call Bev (398-7778)  with needs and info.

~ Cappalappatoys, blankets, newborn and hygiene kits… They are always in need of diapers and baby wipes.

~ ChildHaven - Call Sister Star Hill 398-3270.  Needs sturdy bags of any kind for kids, to hold items.  One suggested bag is: Bag size - buy 1 yd heavy cotton or canvas and fold in half so bag is 36" tall by about 22" wide.  2 pockets would be nice, one in the front and one in the back. Pocket size = 13" wide x 14" tall.

~ Red Cliffs Nursing Home UPDATE: St. George.  Call ‘Lydia’ to make arrangements 435-628-7770—needs 50 pairs slippers, lapghans 45" x 45"; and she said they love scaves!  and little Bingo prizes like little bags of potato chips, tissue holders, tissues, lotions, hand made items etc.

DIRECTIONS FOR QUILTS for LDS HUMANITARIAN
PLEASE:
* Cut ties to 1 1/2" in length
* Check back of quilts for any "boo-boos" - like yarn not pulled clear through and lumpy looking.
* Ties should be 3-4" apaprt or what works best if quilts top has squares larger than 4" then put ties in corners of the square and in the middle of each square.
* Don't place ties too close to the edge of the quilt.
* Don't mix the square knot and the international knot in the same quilt.
* Please tie large quilts on quilting frames if at all possible to avoid wrinkled and saggy backs.

Any questions???  Call St. George 652-8232 Ext 136

~ MESA VIEW HOSPITAL in Mesquite is in need of Newborn hats and booties, and receiving blankets.  Our contact person is:
Mary Jo Mattocks - (702-345-3270)

~ UMC hospital in Vegas needs newborn kits, as well as preemie hats, burial gowns, newborn and preemie booties, and one of their biggest needs is for twin bed afghans for their cancer/chemo patients – they then get to take this blanket home or to the hospice with them.
Sample UMC Newborn Kit: 3-4 newborn paper diapers,
1 bar gentle soap, a hat, blanket, sleeper or gown, booties, maybe a little sweater,.  - you can include things like a pacifier, washcloth, burp rag,  rattle, anything for babies who have nothing.  These all can be placed in a 2 gallon ziplock bag.  All of these are suggestions, but you can make the kits however you chose.  (The lady in charge of volunteers, Suzanne told us that sometimes the baby is sent home wrapped in dad's shirt.)

~ Sunrise Medical Center - (Shared by Sister Penney Rumsey) Daphne Fielder. ph#: 731-8181. (she kinda hard to get a hold of). She has previously told me they need Baby burial stuff. Possible items of creation: burial blanket set- one to bury baby & a memorial one for parents. Children's area suggested Muslin Dolls. Lindsey Hicks there has also previously appreciated small stuffed pillows for children getting blood drawn. no specific size, but fun material is a bonus. The last thing Daphne suggested was handmade picture book covers- for baby memory books. ** Any items ready for donation can be dropped off to Sunrise Emergency Room receptionist- BOLDLY marked TO DAPHNE FEILER, with your contact info for her.

The Moapa Valley Singles Branch has decided they will do 2006 items on their own. They have further challenged any other ward or branch beat their goal, and they will give an Ice Cream party to the Ward or Branch who beats them!
I will try and post updates quickly as the ward and branch leaders send totals to Sister Qualheim.  =)

"I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. ... If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, ... they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditure excludes them."
C.S. Lewis as quoted by Joel J Christensen in LDS General Conference April 1999
