Bev's Sports Tube Socks for Babies!

Many hospitals are interested in receiving these. Larger sizes can be made for shelters. Wonderful for the grandbabies too!
They can be used on babies hands as well.

I used Caron Simply Soft Yarn, and the Newborn Sized needles for the example in the photos.

Materials:
Size 4 knitting needles - use baby yarn (#2 or #3)  weight yarn for preemie sizes.
Size 6 knitting needles for newborn size and soft worsted #4 weight yarn (in Europe 10 ply)  (PHOTOS and sizes are for the newborn size)
Size 8 needles for older babies and soft worsted #4 weight yarn
Striped: 2 colors of soft worsted weight (medium #4) yarn or sport weight (#3)  (12 yards of main color, and 1 yard of a 'stripe' color)

Directions:knit both

Cast on 20 sts (You can knit both booties at the same time using the inside strand and the outside strand)
Ribbed Cuff
Rows 1-5 :  Knit 2, Purl 2 across, ending with purl 2.  (This should measure approximately 3/4" in length)




(for stripes) Rows 6, 7:  Using  2nd color of yarn,  k 2, p 2 across.  Do this pattern in the 2nd color for one more row (you will have 2 rows of the stripe color)
Rows 8-16: Back to main color and k2, p2 pattern.  (after row 16 entire sock should then measure approx 2 1/2",  longer for larger socks)

Main Sock
Row 17: Keeping with main color, knit entire row.
Row 18: Purl entire row.
Row 19-40:  Keep with pattern, knit one row, purl one row--ending with purl row.


Shaping Toe
Row 41: Knit first 2 sts tog,  knit next 6 sts, then k 2 tog, k to last 2 sts and knit 2 tog.
Row 42:  Purl 1st 2 sts tog, purl next 6 sts, purl 2 tog, purl to last 2 sts and purl tog.
Row 43:  Cut yarn with a 12" tail, and weave through remaining sts on needle using a yarn sweing needle.  Pull to close.  Sew up the side seam of sock.

Pattern using 4 dp needles.  


tubeCast on 20 sts - 7 on each of 2 needles, 6 sts on 1 needle
Cuff
Rnds 1-5 :  Knit 1, Purl 1 around.  (This should measure approximately 3/4" in length)
Rnds 6, 7:  (Or keep using one color) Using  2nd color of yarn,  k 1, p 1 across.  Do this pattern in the 2nd color for one more row (you will have 2 rows of the stripe color)
Rnds 8-16: Back to main color and k1, p 1 pattern.  (after row 16 entire sock should then measure approx 2 1/2")

Main Sock
Row 17 - 40: Knit in the round

Shaping Toe
Row 41 and 42: Knit first 2 sts tog,  knit next 6 sts, then k 2 tog, k to last 2 sts and knit 2 tog.  Cut yarn with a 12" tail, and weave through remaining sts on needle using a yarn sewing needle.  Pull to close.
