Bev's Crocheted Newborn Peapod Cocoon

*** CAUTION:  Please remember that this knitted cozy is NOT meant for naptime or sleeping in. It's great for photo ops or keeping baby warm outdoors while you carry him/her in your arms.

GAUGE: 2 rows=1"   7 dc= 2"
Finished Peapod cozy= 15.5" Length and  9.5" across middle


cocoon6 oz soft worsted weight yarn  (I like Simply Soft for these)
H crochet hook

Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring, ch 2. (counts as a HDC now and throughout)
Rnd 1: make 11 HDC in ring, sl st in top of first hdc, ch 2.  (12 hdc)

Rnd 2: 1 hdc in base of ch 2 stitch, 2 hdc in each st around, (but not in the base of the ch2 of the previous round) sl st in top of first hdc, ch 2. (24 sts)

Rnd 3: 1 hdc in base of ch 2 stitch, (hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next) repeat around, sl st to first hdc, ch 2. (35 sts.)

Rnd 4: 1 hdc in base of ch 2 stitch, (hdc in next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) repeat around to the last stitch, sl st to first hdc, ch 2. (45 sts.)

Rnd 5: 1 hdc in base of ch 2 stitch, (hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) repeat around to the last stitch, sl st to first hdc, ch 2. (57 sts).

Rnd 6: 1 hdc in base of ch 2 stitch, (hdc in next 4 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) repeat around to the last stitch, sl st to first hdc, ch 3. (68 sts).

Rnd 7: 1 DC in base of ch 3 stitch, Dc in each HDC around. Sl st to top of ch 3 and join. Ch 3.

Rnd 8: 1 DC in base of ch 3 stitch, Dc in each DC around. Sl st to top of ch 3 and join. Ch 3.

Rnd 9 - 28: Repeat rnd 8 until cocoon measures about 13.5". Sl st to top of ch 3 and join. Ch 3.

CROCHETED TOP:    (OR see below- alternate knitted top)  
Rnd 29-32: BPDC (Back post double crochet) in each dc. Join with sl st and end off. Weave in end.


Alternate Knitted Top
For a special knitted finish at the top, use circular size 6 knitting needles.  On Round 29 - using knitting needles pick up 80 sts around top, and do a ribbing of k2, p2 for 1.5"  Bind off.

You can add an embellishment like a flower for a girls cocoon.

FLOWER
Using a soft thick yarn and an H hook, chain 5 and join to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in the ring, *sc, ch 3, 2 dc in ring (repeat from *, 3 more times to form 5 petals).  Join with slip stitch.
Rnd 2: Ch 5 and join with a sc in the back of the first sc of previous row. *Ch 5 and join with a sc in the back of the next sc. Repeat from * around.
Rnd 3: *Ch 3, 4 dc in the ch 5, join to next ch 5 with a sc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch.  End off and weave in ends.
