Size 5 needles and a size F crochet hook for top.
For larger hats use Size 6 knitting needles, more stitches (divisible by 4) & more rows.

    Cast on 44 (48) sts
    Rows 1-7:  k2, p2 across (ending with p2)

    MAIN HAT
Rows 8 - 4" (4.5")  Knit one row, purl one row until hat measures approx. 4 (5) inches from start. End with a purl row.

DECREASE ROWS: 1) right side (Knit row): *Knit 2, knit 2 together (thru back of sts),  Repeat from * across row.
    2): Purl
    3) *K1, K2tog - repeat from *across row
    4) Purl
    5) *k2tog- repeat across row.
Cut yarn with about a 15" tail.  Thread onto yarn needle and thread it through the sts on the knitting needle, remove and pull tightly.  Now sew down seam to bottom of hat.

Bev's very own 'CRISS-CROSS' TOPNOTCH - see photo:
The top can be either a pom pom, or you can add on a contrasting yarn and crochet several chs at least 8 -10 chs long.  Add each one with a sl st to somewhere on the top of the hat.  Make 10 - 15 of these chs. They can be very random, cross crossing each other, to make it pretty.  Sl st the last chain and then thread the yarn through to the inside of the hat and tie it to the beginning thread.
