Mom's Vanilla
Sauce (for Christmas Pudding
and cakes)
1/2 granulated sugar
2 Tbsp cornstarch
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups boiling water
1/4 cup butter
2 tsp vanilla flavoring
dash nutmeg
Combine first 3 ingredients in saucepan.
Slowly add boiling water, stir constantly to avoid lumps. Simmer, while
stirring about 5 mins. or until clear and thickened. Remove from
heat. Stir in rest of ingredients. Serve hot.
(Mom
also made this into what she called 'Holiday
Sauce' but substituting brandy, fruit brandy, rum or sherry to taste.
The
alcohol will all evaporate off with cooking and just leave a flavor of
vanilla, brandy
etc.)
