Here is a wonderful mitten pattern that I altered to suit my own needs...from a premature baby size (for babies - omit the thumbs) to a man's adult and have used for over 15 years now. You can make different sizes easily by adjusting the number of stitches. Simply add more for a larger size and use fewer stitches to make smaller. I have tried to give you several sizes here....of course, every child is different, but any of these should work well. I am sure your local Homeless Shelter can find a needy person for any of these sizes. I sometimes make the cuffs longer by adding say 5 more chs at each end.

BEV'S MARVELOUS MITTENS - Toddler-no thumbs, Size 3-5 yrs, (7-9 years) (10-adult size)
(NOTE: Mittens are crocheted in one piece lengthwise.)

Materials: size G or H crochet hook (depending on your own tension)  and 2-3 oz of 4 ply worsted yarn or wool.

Chain 55 (5-7years)   63 (8-12 years)   77 (teen/adult years)
Row 1: Sc into next  7(7)(7) chs to form cuff (you will be going into the 2nd ch from hook and into back loops ONLY), sl st next 3 sts for wrist, sc in next 15 (19)(26) sts for hand, sl st next 4 sts for top, sc in next 15 (19) (26) sts for hand, sl st next 3 sts for wrist, sc in next 7 (7)(7) sts for cuff, ch 1 to turn all rows.
Row 2: Working through back loops, sc into each sc and sl st in each sl st of previous row.
Repeat Row 2 for desired width of hand (usually 6-8 ridges).

THUMB
Shape thumb: Keeping in sequence work cuff, wrist and 5 (6) (6) sts of hand. Ch 12 (14), fold the mitten in half and join with a sc to opposite side of mitten (meaning- join in the 5th, 6th sc up from the wrist) See photo opposite.
Now work back down toward cuff  - 5 sc (6 sc) (6 sc) in next 5 (6) (6) sts, sl st in next 3 sts (wrist), and 7 (8) (8)  sc in last 7 (8) (8) sts for cuff. Ch 1 and turn.
Next Row: Repeat pattern to thumb, at thumb - sc in next 5 chs (6 chs), sl st next 2 sts, (this forms top of fingers) sc in remaining 5 sts (6 sts) (6 sts) of ch, finish in pattern down toward wrist again.

Repeat last row 3 - 4 times to form the thumb, working in the scs and sl sts. End off leaving enough yarn to sew completely around mitten. Fold mitten in half & sew around. Turn right side out.
Make another mitten the same.

COAT STRING
Join yarn to one cuff at seam stitches and then sc around entire cuff, make a ch about 2-2 1/2 feet long and join with sl st to other mitten at seam. Sc around that mitten too, and you now have a string to thread mittens through coat. For extra warmth, use double yarn and brush the inside of the mitten with a hair brush to make it 'fuzzy' and soft.

CANADIAN TOQUE/Hat (Copyright 2002, 2009 Cal Aronetz of BC)
Hat will fit a child from aged 4- pre-teen. (Adult size)
4 oz of worsted weight yarn and a Size G hook
Ch 41 (47) sts
Foundation row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch.
Ch 1 and turn.
2nd row: Working thru back loops only of each st throughout, work 1 sc in each st to end of row. Ch 1 and turn.
3rd row: 1 sc in each of 1st 32 (36)sts. Ch 1 and turn.
4th row: 1 sc in each st to end of row. Ch 1 and turn.
5th row: 1 sc in each st across entire row. Ch 1. Turn.
Repeat last 4 rows till work along widest edge measures 15 inches, ending with 3rd row. Fasten off.  
To make up: Sew back seam. Gather short edge of Toque and fasten securely.
Make a pompom as follows and sew pompom to Toque. Wind wool around 4 fingers 75 times. Remove fingers and tie yarn tightly in the center.
Cut through each side of loops and trim to a smooth, round shape.
Attach pompom to crown.

This hat will fit a toddler (1 years - 3 years) and it is super easy!
Size G crochet hook and 3 oz of 4 ply worsted yarn to match above mittens.
Ch 38
ROW 1: Sc (in back loops only) in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn.
ROW 2: Sc in 2nd ch from hook (keep in back loops throughout) and in each st across. (37 sts) Ch 1 and turn.
ROW 3 - 50: repeat row 2. End off. Fold in half to form a tube and whip stitch shut.
Add a pompom to the top.
